New Wireless Standard Offers 62 Mile Range

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has announced the completion of the new IEEE 802.22 wireless network standard, which has been in the works since 2004. Utilizing unused white spaces between channels in the TV frequency spectrum, the 802.22 standard will serve Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRANs), which will bring broadband access to sparsely populated rural areas and developing countries.

IT departments are hungry. Power hungry that is. There’s a lot of electricity involved. If you’ve never been in a data center before, I can tell you it’s really quite a sight. There are typically racks of servers and switches; blinking lights of all colors (green and blue are preferred - red not so much), and next to those servers are massive cooling units comprised of HVAC systems and fans to make sure all the equipment runs smoothly and doesn’t overheat.
