Manage your email

Is your New Year's resolution to better manage your email inbox?  If so, here are a few quick and dirty hints on how to make that happen:

  1. Folders and Filters
Make folders for important subjects and senders in your inbox.  Set up filtering rules in your mail client to automatically sort incoming messages into those folders.  Using filters and subfolders will help you spot the important messages and let you sift through the chaff at your leisure.
  2. Decide what to do and do it
Do you need to answer that message right now?  If so, then DO IT and be done with it.  If you don't need to answer it, then don't.  If you can delete it - delete it.  If it needs to be forwarded, do it.
  3. Unsubscribe or modify newsletter subscriptions
See that "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of the message from the online office supply company?  Click on it, it's ok.
  4. Delete old messages
You probably don't need those messages from 2005.  Set a realistic time frame for what you need to keep.
  5. Archive
If you do need, or want, to keep old messages but don't want them in your inbox then archive them.
